Customizing window treatments allows you to create a unique look that you know no one else has in their home. Creating a truly unique window treatment doesn't have to be overly difficult. Use the following guide to learn how to turn plain white curtains into customized window treatments.

Dye the Curtains

The first thing you need to do to transform your curtains is to dye them a color that will pair well with the color scheme that you already have in your room. If you are someone that likes bold color, consider choosing a very bold color for your curtains. You can get fabric dye at any craft store. Fill a bucket with water and add the dye to the water until it reaches the color you want the curtains to be. Submerge the entire curtain into the water. Allow it to sit for a few minutes.

Slowly pull the curtain out of the water until half of the curtain is in the water and the other half is out of the water. Allow the bottom half of the curtain to stay in the water for a few extra minutes. This will make the bottom half of the curtain darker than the top half of the curtain to create an ombre look. Remove the curtain and lay it on a tarp. Spray it with a water hose to remove any excess dye. Repeat the process with any other curtains you plan to use in the room.

Wash the Curtains

Once you have dyed all of the curtains you plan to use in the room, you need to wash them in your washing machine and dry them. This will ensure that any shrinkage occurs before you actually create the design on the curtains. Dry the curtains in the dryer and then continue with your customization.

Create Your Design

Use a pencil to lightly draw a design on the bottom half of your curtain. You can choose to draw an image, create a print, or use any design you would like. Pour bleach into a small cup and use a tiny paintbrush to paint the design that you drew with the pencil. The bleach will remove the color from the fabric wherever it touches to reveal the image or print that you created.

Allow the bleach to dry, and then you can hang your curtains in the room. The customized curtains will add depth and character to the room, while costing you a fraction of what you would have paid for designer curtains.
